MEGAN: What can you tell the readers about Boomerang?
Boomerang is a romantic comedy that pits Mia and Ethan–two bright, funny, ambitious millennials–against one another in pursuit of their dream job. To further complicate matters: they’re enormously drawn to one another and, as a condition of their job, strictly forbidden to act on that attraction!
MEGAN: I really enjoyed this book so much. Mia and Ethan got themselves into some pretty hilarious situations. What was your absolute favorite scene to write in the Boomerang (without spoilers)?
LORIN: Oh, gosh, SO many of them! I think I had a new favorite every other day while writing. But one of the standouts for me is a scene where Mia goes out on a date—for purposes revealed in the novel—that’s just one hilarious disaster after another.
MEGAN: Oh my gosh! I think that scene was my favorite, too Lorin. I was laughing so hard at both Mia (and Ethan).
VERONICA: Totally agree with Lorin on all counts. The whole book was a blast, but the dates were truly so much fun to write.
MEGAN: Had either of your written with another author prior to this? What was the writing process like?
LORIN: As an editor and ghostwriter, I’ve done a lot of highly collaborative work, but this was my first experience of being a co-author in this way. Basically, we each took ownership of a character (Mia for me; Ethan for Veronica) and wrote our scenes from his or her point of view. We also took responsibility for going into the other’s scenes and tweaking/reworking anything represented by our character. We think it worked out great! (But we might be a smidge biased.)
MEGAN: Veronica, describe Mia in three words.
Warm, smart, funny (and irresistible!)
MEGAN: Lorin, describe Ethan in three words.
Ambitious, athletic, loyal (and HOT!).
MEGAN: What can you tell the readers about Rebound (Boomerang #2) releasing in December?
REBOUND takes place in the same world—the offices of Boomerang/Blackwood Entertainment, and revolves around the relationship between a certain someone and intense, awesome Adam Blackwood.
MEGAN: I am so excited for Adam’s book. I was hoping you would give us more of him and his Ryan Gosling looks. If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
LORIN: Absolutely into the future for me! I’d love to see how we’re doing in a hundred or a thousand years. And then I’d go back to the present and make some smart investments. 😉
VERONICA: Oh, good answer, Lorin! I think I’d actually go to the past. I’d really love to meet a few key historical figures. I’m also just starting to plan a book set in ancient Sparta, so going back there would save me a lot of research time 😉
MEGAN: What is your guilty pleasure?
LORIN: Perfume and purses. Though I buy more books than anything else, I never feel guilty about it!
VERONICA: Shoes! And my new thing is lunch at a local place that makes the most amazing Niçoise salads. I’m there twice a week lately.
MEGAN: What are you currently reading and/or what was the last book you read?
LORIN: I’m currently re-reading Dave Egger’s THE CIRCLE for an upcoming book group as well as Rainbow Rowell’s FANGIRL. Completely different experiences. Both great!
VERONICA: I’m just starting Miranda Kenneally’s BREATHE, ANNIE, BREATHE and Becca Fitzpatrick’s BLACK ICE. Like Lorin, very different books, but both wonderful so far.
MEGAN: Great choices! I’ve yet to read any of those, but I really want to read Fangirl! Speaking of, what authors do you fangirl over and why?
LORIN: SO MANY. All of my author friends (like Veronica!), plus Jonathan Lethem, John Green (I know; I’m totally alone in this), Judy Blume, Michael Chabon, Margaret Atwood, Dave Eggers (my imaginary author husband)… SO many!
VERONICA: Lorin, Rae Carson, Veronica Roth, Tahereh Mafi, Ransom Riggs, Trish Doller, Carrie Mesrobian, Marie Lu. I could keep going. I just realized this is basically a list of friends, but there you have it. I’ve been very fortunate to become friends with extremely talented people!
Lightning Round!!
Chocolate or Candy?
LORIN: Can I go for a third option, and say ice cream?!
VERONICA: Burritos. (Don’t look at me! Lorin broke the mold!)
Beer or wine?
LORIN: Ever the contrarian: mixed drinks!
VERONICA: Yes. Both.
Dirty or Flirty?
LORIN: Flirty…usually.
VERONICA: Uh… flirty.
Unicorns or Dragons?
LORIN: Fire-breathing unicorns, please!
VERONICA: Easy one. Dragons.
Shoes or Purses?
LORIN: Purses by a mile.
VERONICA: Shoes.
Beach or Mountains?
LORIN: Even though my friends like to joke that I’m a massive heliophobe (must protect my fish belly-white flesh), I much prefer the beach. Waves. Salt air. Pelicans swooping around. Love it!
VERONICA: California – which is beach right by the mountains!
Thanks for answering my questions! I really appreciate it!
LORIN & VERONICA: Thanks so much to you and your readers for having us!
About Noelle August:
NOELLE AUGUST is an anagram for Veronica Rossi and Lorin Oberweger. Just kidding, it’s a pen name!
VERONICA ROSSI is the author of the New York Times Best-selling UNDER THE NEVER SKY trilogy for young adults. The books are available in more than thirty countries and the film rights have been optioned by Warner Bros. Veronica completed undergraduate studies at UCLA and lives in Northern California with her husband and two sons. She is fond of dresses with pockets, fluffy dogs, and cheese and chocolate — but not together.
LORIN OBERWEGER began her storytelling career by captivating her first-grade class with tales of her summers on a kibbutz in Israel. Lorin had never been to Israel. While teacher/parent night put an end to her first experiments in fiction, she’d already caught the bug and eventually made a career of all things story. As a long-time independent editor and story development guru, Lorin’s client successes range from small press publications to major bestselling novels. She’s an award-winning author and has also worked behind the scenes as a ghostwriter on a variety of projects. Her work has received starred Kirkus reviews and glowing mentions in The New York Times. Oh, she did get to see a kibbutz, eventually, and found out she had it pretty much right all along.
Veronica and Lorin met at a writing workshop and just knew they were destined to create awesome things together.
