Georgie Read-A-Thon Wrap-Up #2: Succubus Dreams + Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead

SUCCUBUS DREAMS

Amazon | Goodreads | My Review

Ouch.  My heart.  It hurts.  I’m in so much pain right now. Okay.  Let me gather myself.  The ending of this book threw me for a loop and took me completely by surprise.

Let’s go back to the beginning.

First line:  “I wish the guy on top of me would hurry up because I was getting bored.”

Haha! Each of these books start with a bang and this was started out with a bang (get it?)!  Everything is going really well in Georgie’s life for the first time in a LONG time.  She has a wonderful boyfriend who is patient and kind and loves her unconditionally.  Her career as a succubus is one fire.  But in true Richelle Mead fashion, the perfection begins to slip a little bit.

Niphon, the imp who broker’s Georgie’s soul, shows up with a little gift for her — a shiny new succubus named Tawny.  Georgie is put in charge of mentoring her.  This poor girl had no idea how to land even a crappy guy.

Of course, everything can’t be perfect. Something or someone has to mess things up.  In this book, we don’t really know what or who the problem is.  Each time Georgie gets an energy fix and sleeps, she has these vivid dreams.  When she wakes up, she’s almost completely drained of energy.  THE DREAMS!! I was FREAKING the FREAK out when Georgie started dreaming.  When I read this series back in December, the dreams were my one shred of hope.  I clung to them for dear life, hoping that her dreams would come true.  I could feel the pure happiness she felt when she dreamt.  It made me so freaking sad.

Of course, my immediate thought was Niphon had something to do with the dreams.  The timing just seemed too perfect.

Let’s talk about Georgie and Seth.  These two cannot get any more adorable.  I savored every moment they were together in this book.  Perhaps, it’s because both of them get a little more brave in terms of pushing boundaries.  🙁  Richelle Mead is so cruel because she packs so many special moments into this one, only to slap us in the face and knock us down in the end. *shouts to the heaves*  Mead, you are so cruel!!

Georgie and Seth start to fight in this book, but their fights are more out of love than actual conflict.  Hugh reminds Seth that his death will kill Georgie, reminding Seth of his mortality.  The kitchen scene around 74% was a big turning point.  MY HEART HURTS!!!

“Don’t you get it? I have to protect you! If anything were to happen to you—if I’m responsible for anything happening to you—it will kill me. It. Will. Kill. Me. I can’t handle that. I can’t handle anything happening to you. It will kill me!”

My favorite moment:

I slipped it onto my right ring finger. It fit perfectly. Hesitantly, I met his eyes. “This is a, uh, friendship ring right?”
“Yeah, don’t worry. If I propose, you’ll know it. For one thing, I’ll be hyperventilating.” A sly smile—surprisingly sexy—turned up his lips. “And it’ll be a ruby.”

Rubies? No diamonds?  Too expensive for the old writer’s salary, huh?” He made a disparaging grunt at that. “No, I just think diamonds are common, that’s all. If I get married, it’ll be because something uncommon is occurring. Besides, you wear a lot of red, right? I know how important it is for your accessories to match.”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS!

  1. Did any of you see the ending coming?  What were your thoughts?
  2. What did you think of Tawny?  Annoyed or amused?
  3. Did you have any suspicious of Niphon or did you just think he was there to pester Georgie?
  4. What was your favorite Georgie/Seth moment?
  5. Did you think Seth overreacted or was he justified?

SUCCUBUS HEAT

Amazon | Goodreads

With the way things ended in Succubus Dreams, it’s completely understandable as to why Georgie has a little dark.  Georgie is out bringing souls to the darkside like a freaking boss.  She’s drinking more vodka gimlets than she has in a long time and she’s back to smoking.  A LOT.  Hell, if I were in her place, I’d be doing the same thing.

My heart broke for Georgie in this book.  Mead made it so easy for me to put myself into her shoes.  I’ve said this in my reviews, but I feel insanely protective over Georgie.  I wanted to be her BFF and drink with her, cry with her, and be a shoulder for her to cry on.  I am so glad she has Carter.

When I read this book a few months back, Nereyda let me read the synopsis before I started.  It just about gave me a heart attack.  Why?  Jerome goes missing, leaving Georgie and the gang without their supernatural abilities.  Meaning Georgie can get it on with anyone and not steal their life force.  OH DEAR SWEET BABY JESUS!  Worst possible timing EVER!!  Seriously, what the hell!

Seth is unavailable.  Taken.  With Maddie, in love even.  (That sickens me to even type that).  I don’t know about you, but it was impossible for me to dislike Maddie.  She was the nicest person, offering to help Georgie find a seaside home and picking up shifts at the bookstore.  What’s more neither she nor anyone else knew that Georgie and Seth had been item, so I can’t hate her for stealing him.  Maddie is completely innocent.  Arguably, I think Doug had an inkling that Georgie and Seth were more than just friends.  I’ll just hate him.  GAH! I can’t even hate him.  Who can I hate?  Who can I blame this on? I WANNA KNOW!

Poor Georgie.  She had to see Maddie and Seth at the bookstore and at social functions.  That made me so sad.  She’s not completely along.  She started shacking up with Dante Moriarty, a local con artist.  He’s super shady, even Seth’s niece Kayla picked up on that.  When we met him in Succubus Dreams, I didn’t like him but over time he grew on me.

Let’s talk about the loss of power.   Holy freaking crap on a cracker!  When she lost her power and was scared to cross the street, I couldn’t help but chuckle.  I know that’s mean, but hey, it was the perfect opportunity for Seth to sweep in and play knight in shining armor.  I knew in that moment when he takes her to her office that he still loved her. He was only with Maddie for convenience.  GAH! THE PAIN!!  HOLY CRAP, when Georgie tells him that doesn’t need energy fixes, a light bulb totally went off in both their heads.

And then freaking Maddie knocks on the mother freaking door. NOOOOO!!!  I heard porno music in my head that whole time.  Come on, admit it.  You were hearing it too.

Let’s talk about the magical moment in the middle of the book.  I cannot adequately express the jubilation I felt.  I wanted to celebrate. I wanted to scream.  FINALLY! FINALLY!

And then Maddie calls.  That bitch!  Gah! I can’t hate her.

I was glad to see that Georgie and Seth made up for lost time, but I was sad when their time had to come to an end.  They had to face reality and the reality is that Georgie is still immortal and Seth is still with Maddie.  womp womp.

Mead drops a rather large bomb in the end. Sure,  I was pissed and sad and all that.  But I saw right through it.  The cat Georgie found at the end made me feel loads better.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS!

  1. Do you feel protective over Georgie or is it just me?
  2. Do you hate Maddie?  It’s okay if you do.  No judgment. 😉
  3. Did you warm up to Dante like me? Did you trust him?
  4. Pick:  Slow and sensual bedroom Seth OR hard and fast office Seth?
  5. Oh! Oh! Oh!! What did you think of the old character coming back??
  6. Last question, thoughts on the upcoming nuptials?

Favorite Quotes:

“Georgina,” he murmured, pulling me closer. “You are the world.” I’d heard that somewhere before, but I was too overwhelmed to parse it much. I was too lost in Seth. Instead, what I said was unoriginal but absolutely true: “I love you.”

“Sometimes it takes more courage to know when to retreat than to keep fighting.”

“How come we can only get the things we want by being bad? Why can’t we get them by being good?”

“I would have done it. I would have sold my soul for you. You and me…I told you. Something’s always going to keep us near each other…even if we aren’t together.”
